In Japan, we generally respect seniors or boss.

At lunch or dinner meeting, in the taxi, or elevator, we have “Kamiza”, and the position that people who sit or get in depends on their position. Kamiza is available for the most important person present. Shimoza is available for the person of lower status.

Basically, “kamiza” is located farthest from the entrance, and “shimoza” is located closest to the entrance.
