In order for a foreigner to work or study in Japan, they must have a status of residence. (For more information on status of residence, please refer to “Explanation of status of residence!” for more information)
As of June 2019, there were 3,463,597 foreign nationals in Japan, of which 61,675 were in Japan with the status of residence “Designated Activities,” according to data from the Ministry of Justice.
Although it may be small in terms of the total number of people, this article will discuss what “Designated Activities” status of residence is all about.
What is the “Designated Activities” status of residence?
The status of residence “Designated Activities” is defined in the Immigration Control and Refugee Recognition Act (Immigration Control Act) as “activities specifically designated by the Minister of Justice for individual foreign nationals”.
As of January 2020, there are up to 49 specified activities (items 11, 13, and 14 have been deleted), and it is possible to check which of the specified activities a foreigner is entering Japan for by checking the “designation letter” attached to the foreigner’s passport. There is a mixture of content for which work is permitted and content for which it is not.
The activities listed in the “Designated Activities” notice (designated activities as notified)

| 5-2 | Working holiday (Taiwanese) | Activities necessary to supplement travel funds required to spend a certain period of vacation (under a year) in Japan in order to understand Japanese culture and the general way of life in Japan.
Taiwanese who meet the following conditions are eligible. ① Be a resident of Taiwan when applying for the Working Holiday Visa ② Be between the ages of 18 and 30 when applying for the Working Holiday Visa ③ Intend to spend the majority of their time in Japan for a period under a year. ④ Have not issued a Working Holiday Visa before. ⑤ Not be accompanied by a dependent (unless the dependent has been issued a visa). ⑥ Possession of a passport issued by an authorized institution in Taiwan. ⑦ Possession sufficient funds to purchase a travel ticket to return to Taiwan. ⑧ Possession of sufficient funds to earn a living during the initial period of stay in Japan. ⑨ Must be in good health, have a healthy career, and have no criminal record. ⑩ Must be insured in case of death, injury, or illness during their stay in Japan. |
| 9 | Internship | Activities engaged in the business of said institution by students of foreign universities as a part of the relevant educational program of a period under a year and within a period not exceeding half of the total duration fo study at the university concerned in which they receive remuneration from the said institution based on a contract between the university and a public or private institution in Japan. |
| 12 | Summer jobs | Activities in which students of a foreign university are engaged in the business of the said institution designated by the university for a period not exceeding three months and during which classes for the students at the university are not held, receiving remuneration from the said institution based on a contract between the university and a public or private organization in Japan as contributing to the students’ academic performance and future employment. |
